Characteristics

Religious Expression

Mosaics and Frescos were the basis of the movement

Focused on icons

Panels were important during this era

 

History

Started after the split of the Roman Catholic Church into the Eastern and Western halves. 

The art was to focus on the religious icons in the churches for walls, panels, and mosaics.

There was a combination of Christian, Greek, and Egyptian art

Byzantine art sacrificed technique for concept art

Architecture was emphasized to rebuild and growth of religious buildings

Impressionism (19th Century):

 

Characteristics

Lights, reflection, and movement 

Presence of brush strokes and other smaller brush strokes 

Separation of colors between blends 

A focus on landscapes and modern life

 

History

Influenced by the growth of the modern word 

Also influenced by speed and quickness, hence the impression.

Impressionism was not a compliment at the time, but was later recognized

There was a large focus the lights of modern world and reflections 

Architecture was emphasized to rebuild and growth of religious buildings
